Ferran Torres has failed to score in his past eight matches for Paris Saint-Germain, with his last goal coming against Marseille on 20 September.
That barren run has followed a striking start to his PSG career, during which the Spain international scored seven times in six games and was named Ligue 1’s player of the month for September.
The timing of the downturn has increased scrutiny on Torres. With Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia injured, he was expected to take on greater attacking responsibility. Instead, Jodts, Mayulu and Akliouche have carried much of the scoring burden, while Torres has been left on the bench for important fixtures, including Wednesday’s Champions League match against Villarreal.
Torres returned to the starting XI in Saturday’s narrow 1-0 win over Troyes, but could not end his drought. He had three opportunities and sent another effort wide, with his continued failure to convert chances being attributed in France to a loss of confidence.
According to Catalan newspaper Sport, the drop in form should not come as a surprise to anyone who followed Torres during his time at Barcelona. His explosive opening spell raised expectations, but he has never been a forward who scores in almost every match, despite possessing a clear ability to find the net.
Torres scored 13 goals in 36 appearances for Manchester City during the 2020-2021 season. He then managed seven goals in his first full season with Barcelona, followed by 11 in the next campaign.
His most productive periods came in 2024-2025 and 2025-2026, when he scored 19 goals in 45 matches and 21 goals in 49 respectively. Those figures represented an average of one goal every 2.4 games in the first season and one every 2.3 matches in the second.
However, Torres also endured lengthy scoring droughts at Barcelona. In 2024, he went 16 consecutive competitive matches without scoring between 21 January and 1 September, a run that included an injury lay-off of almost two months.
Last season, he failed to score in 14 successive matches before ending a two-and-a-half-month wait with two goals against Espanyol on 11 April. His longest barren spell at Barcelona was a run of 20 games during the 2022-2023 season.
His contribution has not been limited to goals. Torres’ movement can stretch defences, he attacks space behind the back line and applies pressure with intensity.
PSG manager Luis Enrique said he was not concerned by the forward’s current form.
“Everyone was worried about Mica Jodts, and now it is Ferran,” he said at Saturday’s news conference. “It is the forwards who miss chances and score goals.”
He added: “For me, the important thing is that the forwards continue to get big chances.”
