Eight years that changed Aberdeen

Before his Manchester United success, Ferguson had already created an extraordinary legacy at Aberdeen.

During eight years in charge, he ended the traditional dominance of Rangers and Celtic by leading Aberdeen to three Scottish league titles, four Scottish Cups, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup.

Those achievements turned Aberdeen into one of Europe’s most prominent clubs and gave supporters hope that their golden period could continue. His departure therefore appeared to represent not simply the loss of a manager, but the end of an entire project.

The journalist who uncovered the move

On 6 November 1986, BBC Scotland sports journalist and broadcaster Roddy Forsyth was sent to Aberdeen to investigate reports that Ferguson was negotiating with Manchester United.

His flight from Glasgow was crowded with journalists, although most were travelling to cover the aftermath of the Chinook helicopter crash in the Shetland Islands, in which 43 people died.

After arriving in Aberdeen, Forsyth traced Ferguson to an airport hotel, where he was meeting Martin Edwards, then chairman of Manchester United. Forsyth says he found them after asking reception to speak to “Mr Edwards from Manchester” and being told that he was in the restaurant area.

“I heard some voices, followed the sound and found Martin Edwards and Alex Ferguson,” Forsyth recalled. “I asked him directly: ‘Are you the new manager of Manchester United?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’”

A bottle of champagne was on the table. Ferguson poured some into a glass for Forsyth, who raised it to congratulate him on his new position.

Forsyth then contacted the BBC newsroom to confirm the story. “The Sumburgh disaster dominated the main news, while Alex Ferguson led the sports news,” he said. “It was a day packed with news, sport and broadcasting, and one you could never forget throughout your career or life.”

Aberdeen supporters react

The news was met with sadness, anger and shock in the Pittodrie Bar, where BBC programme Reporting Scotland recorded supporters’ responses.

One fan said: “It’s a sad thing for Aberdeen. I think he’s taking the wrong step, and I think he’ll regret it in years to come.”

Another accused Ferguson of contradicting his own lessons about loyalty. “He used to preach about the importance of having loyal players, and envied Rangers and Celtic for having them,” the supporter said. “He criticised players for leaving Aberdeen, but then set the exact opposite example himself.”

Ian Donald, Aberdeen’s vice-chairman, described the departure as “a devastating blow”. “It happened incredibly quickly, almost overnight,” he said in 1986. “Until yesterday morning, we perhaps had the best management team in Britain, and now we are losing them together.”

Captain Willie Miller said the players were also left uncertain. Although Ferguson’s fierce methods might not be tolerated today, Miller said the manager wanted more than trophies: he wanted to win them in style.

A decision vindicated

Aberdeen supporter Sandy Smith, now 72, says the decision was painful but is easier to understand with hindsight.

“It was hugely frustrating and very painful, but to be fair, there is no comparison between Manchester United and Aberdeen,” he said.

Ferguson himself said he had left one of the most secure jobs in British football, including a lifetime contract with Aberdeen. “There was only one club that could tempt me away from Aberdeen, and it was the only club I had always wanted to move to,” he said.

After difficult first two seasons at Manchester United, Ferguson built the club into a dominant force in English and European football, winning 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, two European Cups, five FA Cups and four League Cups.
