Canada head coach Jesse Marsch is working with Brighton and Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler to help Promise David adjust to life in the English Premier League.
The striker joined Brighton from Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, where he scored 41 goals in 82 appearances over two seasons. However, opportunities have been limited since his move to England, with the 24-year-old playing only 78 minutes in all competitions this season.
David has appeared in four of Brighton’s 14 matches, but Marsch believes the forward is in the right environment to continue developing and adapt to the demands of English football.
Marsch said he spoke to Hurzeler about three weeks ago to compare their views on how best to improve David’s game. The Canada manager added that the two coaches had reached similar conclusions about the areas the striker needs to work on if he is to reach a higher level.
He also praised David’s attitude and confidence during a period in which regular first-team football has been difficult to secure.
To maintain a close link with Brighton, Marsch has asked his assistant coach Mauro Biello to speak every week with a member of the club’s technical staff. Those discussions are intended to monitor David’s progress and provide Canada with regular feedback on his development.
The striker could now have an important part to play for Canada in their upcoming UEFA Nations League-style CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final tie against Guatemala.
With Cyle Larin unavailable because of injury, David may be given the chance to lead Canada’s attack across the two-legged contest.
Canada will play the first leg away in Guatemala on November 13. The return match will take place at BMO Field in Toronto on November 16.
