Bayern Munich extended their unbeaten start to this season’s Champions League with a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid.
Lennart Karl recovered from a difficult opening half to put the visitors ahead nine minutes after the interval. The 18-year-old took advantage of a mistake by Robin le Normand, getting behind the Atletico defender before stealing possession and lifting a composed finish over Jan Oblak.
Konrad Laimer added a second goal with a powerful strike after being found in space by Harry Kane. The Austria midfielder drove the ball beyond Oblak and into the roof of the net to give Bayern a commanding advantage.
The result keeps Bayern unbeaten in the competition and strengthens their position ahead of their next match against Lille on Wednesday 25 November.
Karl’s first-half struggles included several misplaced moments, but he made amends in impressive fashion after the break. His goal came when he reacted quickest to the loose ball before producing a delicate chip that left Oblak with no chance.
Kane, playing in his first European match since winning the Ballon d’Or, was unable to add to Bayern’s lead. The England captain had been on target in each of his previous 10 appearances and was seeking to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the longest Champions League scoring streak.
However, Kane could not beat Atletico’s goalkeeper. He sent an acrobatic effort wide before another attempt, struck low, went off target.
Atletico also faced pressure from Bayern’s defence and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had a largely quiet evening. The hosts managed only one shot on target, offering little to suggest they would overturn the deficit.
Oblak did prevent Bayern from scoring again when he reacted sharply to tip a deflected effort from Dayot Upamecano on to the crossbar. The save briefly kept Atletico within reach, but Laimer’s goal ensured the German side’s control of the match.
Bayern will continue their Champions League campaign against Lille on Wednesday 25 November. Atletico Madrid will play Norwegian champions Viking on the same evening.
