Ibrahim Tanko says he is proud to be part of the Ghana coaching team despite the Black Stars’ difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two matches. They were beaten 2-0 by Ivory Coast in Bouake before suffering a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The results brought an end to Carlos Queiroz’s time as head coach and left the four-time African champions looking for a new direction.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have appointed a five-member committee to recommend a permanent replacement for Queiroz.
While that process continues, Kim Lars Bjorkegren has been placed in charge of the Black Stars. Tanko, Godwin Attram and Fatau Dauda have joined his technical team for the forthcoming two-match series against Somalia.
Tanko, who is also head coach of Medeama SC, said taking on responsibilities with the national side was an honour, regardless of Ghana’s current position.
“I am proud to be one of those who can help Ghana in this very tough situation,” he told Joy Sports.
“For me, national duty is something special. I have served Ghana in different capacities, and whenever the opportunity comes to contribute, I see it as a privilege.
“The situation may be challenging, but we must be ready to give our best,” he added.
Ghana will play Somalia twice in November, with the opening match scheduled for November 12 and the return fixture on November 16. Both games will be hosted in Ghana.
The interim coaching staff is expected to name its squad this week as preparations continue for the two fixtures.
Victory in both matches would give Ghana the chance to revive their qualification hopes, but the Black Stars are under significant pressure after their winless start.
They are also seeking a return to the continental finals after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Ghana finished bottom of their qualifying group for that tournament without winning a match.
