Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia could be played at either the Accra Sports Stadium or the Essipong Sports Stadium, the Acting National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has said.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is seeking to move the fixture to Essipong Sports Stadium in the Western Region, despite official confirmation that the Accra Sports Stadium has been selected as the venue.
Ghana are scheduled to play Somalia twice during the November international break, with the matches serving as Matchday 3 and Matchday 4 of the qualifying campaign.
Osei Sarpong said the NSA had received correspondence naming the Accra Sports Stadium as the host venue, but that discussions were under way over a possible change.
“The game can be played either at the Accra Sports Stadium or at the Essipong Sports Stadium,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“Officially, the letter we have states that the game will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium, but the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pushing for the game to be played at the Essipong Sports Stadium.
“There is a meeting, and by the close of day today, a decision will be made on where the game will be played,” he added.
Ghana are due to host the opening match on Thursday, 12 November, before welcoming Somalia again for the return fixture on 16 November. Both games are expected to be played in Ghana.
The Black Stars will enter the double-header looking to recover from a difficult start in Group C. They lost successive matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in October and have yet to earn a point in the qualifying campaign.
The four-time African champions need maximum points from the two meetings with Somalia to revive their hopes of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana are also attempting to avoid missing the tournament for a second successive edition after failing to qualify for the 2025 finals in Morocco.
The Essipong Sports Stadium was most recently used for the Black Queens’ victory over Malawi in the 2028 Olympic Games Qualifiers.
