The Black Maidens have returned to Ghana after reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026.
The team arrived on Monday, following a campaign that placed Ghana among the eight best sides at the tournament. Their run ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat by Japan in the last eight.
Ghana had secured its quarter-final place after a dramatic Round of 16 victory over Argentina. The match finished 1-1 after regulation time before the Black Maidens prevailed 5-4 on penalties.
They completed that victory despite being reduced to 10 players after Hajara Adam was sent off. Jessica Appiah scored the decisive penalty and was named Player of the Match.
Against Japan, Coach Joe Nana Adarkwa’s team were beaten by Nanami Kurita’s 54th-minute goal. Japan have since reached the semi-finals after breaking their quarter-final curse.
President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku met the squad at their base in Accra on Monday morning to congratulate the players and technical staff on their performances and their representation of Ghana on the international stage.
He praised the team’s discipline, determination and tactical organisation throughout the competition, while urging the players to use their experience in Morocco as a foundation for their continued development.
President Simeon-Okraku also recognised the work of head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa and his backroom staff, who guided the team to the last eight despite significant setbacks caused by injuries and suspensions.
Captain Seidatu Wahab and Hajara Adam were both unavailable for the quarter-final against Japan.
Several players made a notable impression during Ghana’s campaign. Jessica Appiah, Cynthia Obinsrewuo, Osman Rafia, Gloria Ameaa Adomako and goalkeeper Belinda Marku Aklie were among the stand-out performers for the Black Maidens.
The President assured the team that the Association would maintain its support for women’s youth football and continue investing in its development.
He said that backing was intended to help ensure the Black Maidens return stronger in future competitions.
The quarter-final appearance marked the conclusion of a resilient tournament for Ghana, who overcame a numerical disadvantage and a penalty shootout in the previous round before narrowly missing out against Japan.
