Gold Fields Ghana Limited has pledged US$500,000 to support Ghana’s amputee national football team, the Black Challenge, ahead of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.
The commitment covers a two-year period and forms part of Gold Fields Ghana’s wider US$5 million sponsorship agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), which was unveiled on May 8, 2026.
Company representatives met the squad at the Mandiata Hotel in Accra to offer encouragement before the tournament. The meeting was attended by GFA President Kurt Okraku, National Paralympic Committee (NPC) President Samson Deen and other dignitaries.
Gold Fields Ghana Vice President and Managing Director Elliot Twum told the players they had an opportunity to represent Ghana with distinction and reaffirmed the company’s continuing support.
“This is your opportunity to hold high the flag of Ghana because you’ve achieved a lot. We want to continue to support football and to continue to be associated with the Black Challenge,” he said.
“We have a lot of confidence in you, and that’s why we’re supporting you. We want to encourage you to do your best, and we have no doubt that you will give us a lot to cheer about.”
The Black Challenge have been placed in Group D, where they will face Angola, Colombia and Iraq.
The 2026 Amputee Football World Cup will be held in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico, from November 13 to 22.
Okraku also called on the squad to deliver a performance that would make the country proud, while assuring the players that the GFA would provide the support required for their World Cup preparations.
He said the association was working with Gold Fields Ghana and Samson Deen to ensure the team had the right conditions in which to prepare.
“Be rest assured that Ghana is with you. It is now your time to go and make us proud,” Okraku said.
Deen praised Gold Fields Ghana and the GFA for their continued investment in amputee football, describing the support as something the sport had needed for many years.
“This is what we’ve been looking for over many years. I want to say that we are grateful for what the GFA and Gold Fields have done. Thank you very much. We really appreciate it,” he said.
