Despite the scale of the offer, the transfer did not go ahead. Fernandes later confirmed that he had received an approach from Al-Hilal and revealed that Fahd bin Nafel, who was the club’s chairman at the time, had contacted him personally to establish whether he would consider moving to the Saudi league.
The latest reports had suggested that Al-Hilal could return for the Manchester United midfielder in January, but Jacobs’ comments indicate that the club’s current foreign-player limit would prevent such a move.
