The Accra Sports Stadium is structurally safe to accommodate large crowds at upcoming events, according to National Sports Authority (NSA) Acting Director General Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong.
His comments follow concerns over the condition of the facility after the former NSA Board Chairman described some parts of the stadium as a “death trap”.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Professor Osei Sarpong said engineering assessments had found the stadium to be in satisfactory condition and suitable for spectators.
“We have done some engineering assessments, and we have realised that the place is not too bad. Based on the assessments we have done, I believe the area will be safe for people who will be part of the programme,” he said.
He added that the NSA had carried out reinforcement work at the stadium and that it had hosted two major events consecutively in recent times.
The area beneath the scoreboard, which had previously been cordoned off, has also been assessed. Professor Osei Sarpong said it was now considered safe for use.
The stadium has an official capacity of 40,000, but the NSA is working with organisers to manage attendance and prevent overcrowding.
Professor Osei Sarpong said measures were also being put in place to ensure spectators did not spill onto the pitch during events.
Organisers have been advised to use the VTA area as an additional viewing section if crowds exceed expectations. Giant screens will be provided there to allow spectators to follow proceedings.
