The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in connection with the death of 23-year-old footballer Agartha, also known as Agartha Takyiwaa and nicknamed “1 Cedi”.
Agartha, a defender for Fabulous Ladies FC, was found dead after reportedly accepting a request to transport a passenger while working as a commercial tricycle operator.
The suspects were arrested in Techiman in the Bono East Region while allegedly attempting to flee from security personnel, according to the club’s head coach, Nana Atuahene.
Police reportedly found them in possession of Agartha’s tricycle and mobile phone. Their arrests are expected to support investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death, including the identity of the person alleged to have hired her and the motive for the attack.
Initial reports indicate that Agartha may have been killed after taking the passenger. The individual who reportedly hired her services is alleged to have attacked her with a knife, stabbing her and slitting her throat.
However, the precise sequence of events and the full details of the alleged attack have not yet been officially established.
Agartha is understood to have combined her football career with commercial tricycle operations, popularly known as “pragya”, in order to earn a living.
Coach Atuahene said Fabulous Ladies FC had not yet formally informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) about the incident.
He also drew attention to the financial challenges affecting women’s football in Ghana, saying players received limited support because they were registered as amateurs rather than professionals.
“Women’s football is still young in Ghana. Our players are registered as amateurs, not professionals, so we support them with only transportation costs,” he told Luve FM in an interview.
