Three-year-old Nevada Pierre has attracted international attention after a youth football match in Florida ended with police being called to a dispute involving his parents and league officials.
Videos from the game in Winter Park showed Pierre dribbling past older children and scoring goals, prompting widespread discussion about his ability. His parents alleged that he was being excluded because he was significantly better than the other players.
The disagreement between the adults escalated at the venue, leading to police intervention. However, police records said officers were responding to a dispute between the adults, rather than a complaint about Pierre’s footballing performance. Nobody was arrested.
The case has raised questions about how grassroots football should respond when very young players appear to be considerably ahead of their peers. Pierre, though, is not the first child under 10 to gain worldwide attention for footballing ability.
