Frank Ilett, the Manchester United supporter known as “The United Strand”, appeared to end his famous no-haircut challenge after reaching 103 matches without visiting a barber.
Ilett surprised followers with an Instagram video in which he appeared completely bald. He opened the clip by saying: “Enough… I’ve had enough,” before showing several possible hairstyles for the next stage of his challenge.
The apparent change was later revealed to be part of a promotional campaign for an artificial intelligence platform. Ilett ended the video by confirming that his challenge remained in place.
“The challenge is still ongoing, and I am committed to it,” he said. “I will not cut my hair until Manchester United win five matches in a row.”
Ilett also posted a separate video on Facebook following Manchester United’s defeat by Chelsea. “Another defeat, no surprises,” he said, reaffirming that the result had not brought the challenge to an end.
Challenge reaches 103 matches
The supporter began the challenge on 5 October 2024, promising not to visit a barber until Manchester United recorded five consecutive victories in competitive matches. At the time, he believed the target would be reached within a few months.
Instead, the challenge has continued for 103 matches and 757 days. The target had still not been achieved by Manchester United’s meeting with Chelsea on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Five managers have led the club during that period, either on a permanent or interim basis: Erik ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick.
Despite those changes in the dugout, Manchester United have not produced the required sequence of five successive wins, leaving Ilett committed to maintaining his unusual protest.
The fixture information accompanying the report lists Manchester United’s Champions League meeting with Roma on 03 November 2026. It also lists Sunderland and Chelsea in Premier League action on 08 November 2026.
