Spain have been fined €10,000 by UEFA for delaying the start of their Nations League match against England at Wembley.
The punishment is an additional sanction for the Spanish national team, which was fined by FIFA only weeks earlier over events during a friendly against Egypt.
UEFA’s disciplinary body ruled that Spain had breached Article 11, paragraph two, section “Y” of its disciplinary regulations by causing the match to start late. The decision was reported by Mundo Deportivo.
The fixture against England took place at Wembley last September in the opening round of the qualifying phase for the Nations League.
The latest penalty comes as the Spanish Football Federation considers whether to appeal the earlier FIFA punishment. That case followed Spain’s goalless draw with Egypt in March, when a group of Spanish supporters were heard chanting anti-Muslim slogans, including: “Whoever does not jump is Muslim.”
FIFA subsequently ordered Spain to play their next international friendly in a partially closed stadium and imposed a $20,000 fine.
UEFA’s proceedings also resulted in sanctions against France and Portugal for separate incidents involving the timing or conduct of their matches.
France were fined €10,000 after their game against Turkey on 25 September began late. France won the match 1-0, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the only goal.
Zinedine Zidane, France’s manager, was also formally warned over the incident.
Portugal were fined €20,000 for misconduct during their 2-1 victory against Norway on 27 September. Their manager, Jorge Jesus, received a warning for the delayed start to the match.
The three sets of disciplinary measures were issued as part of UEFA’s action over the relevant fixtures.
The Nations League schedule lists England against Croatia and Czechia against Spain for 12 November 2026, with both matches included under the competition’s first pathway.
Spain’s further financial penalty therefore follows a previous case involving supporter behaviour, while the latest UEFA decision relates specifically to the delayed kick-off at Wembley.
