Dean Huijsen delivered the kind of display Jose Mourinho had been waiting for as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday, producing a complete performance that strengthened his position in the club’s defence.
The young centre-back’s quality in possession and potential to become one of Europe’s leading defenders have never been seriously questioned. However, his performances in several high-profile matches had raised concerns, particularly after the recent derby against Atletico Madrid and a number of clasicos.
Those doubts were finally eased in Barcelona, according to Marca. Huijsen was among Real Madrid’s most important players, combining authority in the tackle with firm defending and concentration throughout the 90 minutes.
Huijsen’s numbers make the case
The statistics underline the significance of his contribution. Huijsen made 10 clearances, completed 16 defensive interventions and recorded four interceptions.
Barcelona applied intense pressure at various stages, but the Spain defender maintained his position, timed his challenges effectively and showed the decisiveness required when Real Madrid were under sustained pressure.
He was also composed with the ball, completing 37 of his 45 passes for an accuracy rate of 83%. Seven of those passes broke through the defensive lines, highlighting his role in helping Real Madrid progress their attacks.
Huijsen’s contribution was therefore not limited to stopping Barcelona. His ability to begin moves calmly gave Real Madrid alternative solutions when their opponents disrupted their usual passing routes.
He recognised when a short pass was the safest option and when a different route was needed to bypass Barcelona’s first defensive line. That helped Real Madrid relieve pressure during some of the most demanding periods of the match.
The combination of defensive strength and composure in possession explains why the performance represented more than simply a good night at the back.
Its importance was also shaped by Huijsen’s recent history. Difficulties at Wanda Metropolitano in 2025 and 2026 had prompted questions about how he would perform on the biggest stages. Inconsistency during the previous season also prevented him from finding the level of reliability expected when he joined Real Madrid and ultimately contributed to his omission from the 2026 World Cup squad.
Mourinho’s influence
Mourinho has played a central role in Huijsen’s development, helping him add greater strength and defensive solidity without removing the attacking qualities that distinguish him.
The defender appears increasingly comfortable in a system that demands intense concentration, aggression and the willingness to compete for every ball. There remains room for improvement, but he is beginning to turn his ability into more consistent and rounded performances.
His current form has strengthened his status in the Real Madrid defence. With Eder Militao nearing the end of his recovery and working towards full fitness, the partnership of Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen has emerged as Mourinho’s preferred option.
The performance in the clasico offered significant evidence in favour of that decision and gave Huijsen valuable momentum as he seeks to establish himself during a decisive stage of the season.
