Rennes striker Boulaye Dia believes Gennaro Gattuso has made a significant impact at Lazio, with the club’s strong start to the campaign reflecting the Italian coach’s work rather than any instant solution.
Lazio have moved level on points with Inter at the top of the table after an impressive opening to the season, although Dia admits he did not expect the team to make such rapid progress. The Senegal international spent time at the club before returning to France and says Gattuso has helped restore confidence after a disappointing previous campaign.
Dia told Flashscore that signs of improvement were already visible during pre-season, despite Lazio’s 2-0 defeat by Mantova in the Coppa Italia.
“He’s not a magician; there is simply a lot of work behind it. People judged him on his previous experiences, but every club and every situation has its own reality. He came with a mission to accomplish, and so far he’s doing it extremely well,” Dia said.
The striker added that Gattuso’s arrival had changed the squad’s mentality and given Lazio renewed belief. Dia remains in contact with former team-mates, including Reda Belahyane and Tijjani Noslin, and continues to follow the club’s matches after leaving Italian football.
Asked whether he was pleased with the way Lazio had responded under their new coach, Dia replied: “Yes, definitely. He’s showing it so far; what he’s doing is excellent.”
Lazio’s progress has been particularly notable in the context of their previous season, when the club struggled to produce the consistency now reflected in their position alongside Inter. Dia said Gattuso had approached the role with a clear purpose and was so far fulfilling that task effectively.
Dia settles back into Ligue 1
Dia is also adjusting to life back in Ligue 1 after five years away from France. He joined Rennes following his spell in Italian football and says the division has developed during his absence.
The forward has welcomed the competition for places within Rennes’ attack, including the battle for playing time alongside Esteban Lepaul. His return to France has therefore brought a fresh challenge, while he continues to keep track of Lazio’s progress from a distance.
