Dani Carvajal has revealed that he spoke directly to Rodri and attempted to convince the Spain captain to join Real Madrid during last summer’s transfer window.
Carvajal, the former Real Madrid captain who now plays for Getafe, said the club had opened talks with Rodri before Barcelona intervened and changed the midfielder’s destination to Camp Nou.
Speaking to the El Larguero programme on Cadena SER, Carvajal was asked whether he had been surprised by Rodri’s decision to sign for Barcelona.
“You would have to ask Rodri about that as well,” he said. “I spoke to him, he asked me some questions and I tried to persuade him. I think there were others on the other side as well. I am sure he has his reasons for choosing to play there, at Barcelona.”
Carvajal was also asked whether Real Madrid needed a player of Rodri’s quality.
“Every team would want to sign a player like Rodri,” he said. “He is an amazing player and it is difficult to find someone like him. He would be a great addition to any team.”
The former Real Madrid captain also offered support to Vinicius Junior, who he believes is experiencing a difficult period following his recent dismissal.
“In every career, there are always difficult moments, and I think Vinicius is going through one of them, especially after being sent off recently,” Carvajal said. “But he has to remain calm because he has just renewed his contract. He is a wonderful player and an exceptional person.”
Carvajal said he expected Vinicius to recover strongly, pointing to the more challenging situations the Brazil forward had already overcome.
“I know Vinicius will return in his best form because he has got through more difficult situations,” he added. “I experienced those moments with him in the dressing room.”
Carvajal unsure about Vinicius departure talks
Carvajal was then asked whether he had discussed with Vinicius the possibility of leaving Real Madrid.
“I have not had the opportunity to speak to him in great detail about that,” he replied. “But I know Real Madrid was involved in the renewal of his contract, and I know he may not have been short of offers to leave.”
His comments come after Real Madrid’s summer pursuit of Rodri failed to produce a deal, with Barcelona ultimately securing the Spain captain. Carvajal said he believed Rodri’s decision was based on reasons known to the player himself, while stressing that the midfielder’s qualities would improve any side.
