Ghanaian prophet Telvin Sowah Adjei has claimed Inaki Williams should have represented Spain rather than Ghana, saying the Athletic Bilbao forward’s international career suffered after he changed allegiance.
Sowah Adjei said Williams was destined to play for Spain’s La Roja and would have excelled for the European nation, potentially becoming one of its leading international goalscorers.
He believes the decision to represent the Black Stars was not part of Williams’ future and had a damaging effect on his performances for Ghana.
“Inaki was supposed to play for Spain; he would have been one of the top scorers, but he made a mistake and redirected his destiny to Ghana,” he said in Twi during an interview with UTV.
“He was not supposed to play for Ghana, not even one match. It was a terrible decision he made; it was not part of his future.”
Williams was born in Ghana to Ghanaian parents but initially represented Spain at youth level before completing a switch of international allegiance in 2022.
He made his Ghana debut in June that year after becoming eligible to play for the country of his parents. The forward was subsequently included in Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
However, his performances for the national team did not match the form he had shown at club level with Athletic Bilbao. In 28 appearances for the Black Stars, Williams scored just two goals.
Sowah Adjei attributed that record to the decision to join Ghana, saying the move had placed the player in an environment where he could not perform effectively.
“So he came into a dry atmosphere, so he has become useless,” he added. “It is good that he is going, so he should go; it is a very good decision.”
The prophet also praised Williams’ decision to retire from international football, describing it as the right course of action after his difficult spell with the Black Stars.
Williams, who is captain of Athletic Bilbao, had been expected to reproduce his impressive club performances on the international stage after changing allegiance from Spain to Ghana.
Instead, he made 28 appearances for Ghana and scored twice before the decision to step away from international football.
