The Black Maidens began their campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Norway before producing an entertaining 3-3 draw against Brazil. That result left them needing a positive outcome against Canada to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
Adarkwa said the team was delighted to deliver the result it had targeted.
“We are happy. You can see on the front; the girls are happy. As a coach, I’m very, very happy, and they made us proud, they made us extremely proud,” he said.
Ghana’s coach said victory over Canada had been the specific objective before the match.
“We came here purposely for a win, and lo and behold, it happened. So, this is what we planned for,” he added.
Adarkwa also credited his technical team, particularly the changes made after half-time, for helping Ghana secure the decisive win.
“At least in the second half, our changes were wonderful. Our changes, we did well. I’m proud of myself and my technical team,” he said.
The Black Maidens will face Argentina in the Round of 16 on 28 October. Adarkwa said the level of difficulty would increase as Ghana moved deeper into the competition.
“Going forward, I know we are heading to difficult times. We are going to face tougher opposition, and we are going to work towards that,” he concluded.
Having overcome their difficult start, Ghana will now look to build on their victory over Canada when they meet Argentina for a place in the next round.
