Hansi Flick has urged Barcelona to remain fully focused before their La Liga Clasico against Real Madrid at Camp Nou tonight, while describing Lamine Yamal’s season as “wonderful”.
Speaking to DAZN shortly before kick-off, Barcelona manager Flick acknowledged the quality of their opponents but insisted his own side had the ability to compete.
“Real Madrid are a great team, but we also have great potential,” said Flick. “I want to see the team focused.”
Flick believes his players understand what is required in one of the biggest fixtures in football and are capable of managing the occasion.
“I think the players know very well how to manage the game, especially the Clasico,” he added.
The German coach said Barcelona’s experience of facing Real Madrid since his arrival had prepared the squad for the demands of the match.
“We have played many similar games against Real Madrid over the past two years since I arrived, so the players have enough experience and know what awaits them,” said Flick.
Despite the importance of the fixture, Flick said he remained calm and wanted his players to concentrate on their responsibilities rather than the attention surrounding the game.
“I am calm. It is great to see everyone following this match, but we have to focus on what we need to do on the pitch,” he said.
Flick also reserved praise for Yamal, who has continued to make a major impact for Barcelona during the season.
“Lamine Yamal is having a wonderful season,” he said. “He shows his commitment and mentality in every training session, and it is incredible to watch him. I hope he always continues to play at this level.”
The Barcelona manager was also asked about the absence of Thibaut Courtois, who is missing for Real Madrid.
Flick recognised the importance of the Belgium goalkeeper, but said Barcelona also had to cope with injuries within their own squad.
“We know that Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and he proves that in every match,” said Flick. “But we also have injured players, and that is something we have to deal with.”
