Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand will host Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for a high-level visit on 26 October 2026, Global Affairs Canada has announced.
The meeting will focus on strengthening a partnership Ottawa describes as enduring and multifaceted, supported by close people-to-people links, extensive bilateral cooperation and shared commitments to sustainable development, democratic governance, peace and security.
Anand and Ablakwa are expected to discuss bilateral, regional and global priorities during their talks. The discussions will also look at how the two countries can build on almost seven decades of diplomatic and wider cooperation.
Canada and Ghana work together on inclusive economic growth, regional stability and the promotion of multilateralism. Both countries support cooperation through international organisations including the United Nations, the Commonwealth and La Francophonie.
The visit will also include talks between Ablakwa and the Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State for International Development. Their meeting will address Canada-Ghana development cooperation and ways to strengthen the long-standing relationship.
Those discussions will include mutually beneficial economic partnerships, inclusive social development and sustainable peace and security.
According to figures published by Global Affairs Canada, Canada and Ghana will mark 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.
Ghana is described by Canada as a long-standing partner on the African continent. It also plays a significant role in regional and continental organisations, including the African Union, and hosts the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
In 2025, Ghana was Canada’s eighth-largest merchandise trading partner in Africa. Merchandise trade between the two countries was valued at 752 million dollars that year.
