Inter Milan came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 in a dramatic finish to their Serie A meeting on Sunday, with Marcus Thuram and Piotr Zielinski scoring in the closing stages.
The victory lifted Inter Milan to 22 points from eight matches, their seventh win of the campaign. They are level on points with Lazio but lead them on goal difference following the weekend’s fixtures.
Fiorentina appeared set to claim a valuable away victory after Alex Jimenez opened the scoring in the 65th minute. The Fiorentina player struck a powerful effort which flew past the Inter goalkeeper and into the net.
Inter continued to press for an equaliser and were rewarded when Thuram found the net in the 90th minute. The France forward’s finish brought the hosts level and kept alive their hopes of completing a late turnaround.
That comeback was completed in the eighth minute of added time, when Zielinski converted from the penalty spot to secure all three points for Inter Milan.
The result also gave Thuram a place in Inter’s history. According to Opta, he has now scored in at least seven consecutive home Serie A matches during the era in which three points have been awarded for a win.
He is only the third Inter player to achieve that feat. Romelu Lukaku scored in seven successive home league games in 2021, while Christian Vieri holds the club record after finding the net in 11 consecutive home matches in 2003.
Thuram’s goal proved significant beyond the personal milestone, rescuing Inter from what would have been a damaging home defeat before Zielinski’s penalty completed the turnaround.
Fiorentina’s difficult start to the season continued. They remain on four points after eight matches, having suffered their sixth defeat, alongside one victory and one draw.
Inter’s victory leaves them firmly among the leading sides after eight rounds, while Fiorentina must recover from another loss after surrendering their advantage in the final minutes.
