Panathinaikos manager Jacob Neestrup says Azzedine Ounahi’s injury is a significant blow to the Greek club, with the Morocco midfielder facing an estimated absence of between two and a half and three months.
Ounahi will miss Panathinaikos’ next match against Kairat Almaty after suffering a serious muscle tear in his right thigh. Neestrup confirmed the player’s unavailability before the fixture and said he would be absent alongside team-mate Yagosic.
The manager added that the expected length of each player’s absence would be different, depending on the nature of their respective injuries.
Neestrup said Ounahi’s absence would have a clear impact on his tactical plans. The Morocco international has been an important part of the Panathinaikos team because of his technical ability and the influence he provides in midfield.
His injury leaves the coaching staff facing the task of finding suitable alternatives for the coming period, as Panathinaikos prepare for a number of important commitments without one of their prominent midfield options.
The 25-year-old was injured during Panathinaikos’ victory over Asteras Tripolis. Medical examinations subsequently confirmed the extent of the problem, with the muscle tear regarded as a major setback for a side that relies on Ounahi’s qualities in the middle of the pitch.
Neestrup expressed his disappointment at what had happened to the player and offered his support during the recovery process. He said Ounahi’s role within the group and his importance to the team made the injury particularly unfortunate.
The Panathinaikos technical staff will continue to provide the Morocco international with the necessary assistance as he works towards regaining his physical and technical fitness.
The initial estimate suggests Ounahi could miss a substantial number of Panathinaikos matches. It also reduces the options available to Neestrup for the club’s upcoming fixtures, although the final recovery period will depend on how the player’s condition develops and how he responds to treatment.
There are also concerns that the injury could keep Ounahi out of action for a lengthy spell, although the eventual timetable remains subject to further progress during his rehabilitation.
