Ghana’s 15-member Golden Arms contingent will travel to New Delhi on Saturday, October 24, for the 2026 World Armwrestling Championship, which runs from October 26 to November 7.
The team includes 11 competitors, team manager Abass Sulley and three referees: Husseini Akueteh Addy, Nii Otoo Larkyne and Abigail Frema. Ghana will be bidding to win medals against the leading armwrestlers in the world.
The women’s line-up consists of Mabel Yeboah in the 60kg category, Blessed Abeka Nunoo at 65kg, Grace Minta at 89kg, Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah in the 110+kg division, and Comfort Dunyo in the 60kg Masters event.
Edward Asamoah Yamoah, Haruna Tahiru, Godwin Sackey, Daniel Acquah, Charles Osei Asibey Jr., Henry Otoo and Asinu Dodzie make up the men’s squad.
Youth competitor Yeboah is aiming to improve on her results at previous world championships after winning two medals at her first appearance in 2025.
“Winning of medals is in our DNA. My first time in 2025 I won silver and bronze. My focus is gold in India,” Yeboah told the Graphic Sports.
Ghana’s presence at the world event is the latest stage in a decade of development for the sport. The Ghana Armwrestling Federation received official recognition in 2016 and subsequently affiliated with the continental and world governing bodies.
The Golden Arms made their breakthrough at continental level by winning 22 medals at the 2017 African Armwrestling Championship in Lagos. Ghana later hosted the competition in Accra, where the team claimed 88 medals in 2018, 132 in 2023 and a record 168 in 2026.
The federation says Ghanaian athletes have won 573 medals over the past decade at continental championships, the African Games and world championships. That total includes 41 medals at the 2023 African Games, held on home soil.
Despite those achievements, financing remains a concern before the trip to India. The federation is seeking assistance from corporate Ghana, government institutions, philanthropists and sports enthusiasts to fund the team’s travel and participation.
It says that support would help prevent financial difficulties from affecting Ghana’s medal ambitions as the Golden Arms look to build on their growing international reputation.
