Former Ghana international Ntow Gyan has alleged that influential figures within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are interfering with the selection of the Black Stars squad.
The former Asante Kotoko midfielder said the involvement was limiting coaches’ ability to make independent decisions about the senior national team.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Gyan raised concerns about how much authority coaches have over the selection process. He suggested that certain powerful individuals had preferred players they wanted included, potentially preventing coaches from choosing teams based on current form and tactical requirements.
His comments come amid continuing concerns in Ghana over alleged interference in player selection across the country’s national teams. There have also been calls for coaches to be given greater control over their squads.
Gyan said Ghana must also invest more in grassroots football and improve the domestic system for developing talent. He argued that the country should not become too dependent on players based abroad.
The former midfielder believes a defined route from grassroots football, through the domestic leagues and into the Black Stars, would help Ghana identify and develop players capable of competing at the highest level.
He also called for improvements to local football and for coaches to be allowed to build competitive teams without undue interference.
The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are currently looking for a permanent Black Stars head coach after the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
Queiroz left his position after Ghana began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with successive defeats by Ivory Coast and The Gambia. Those results left the Black Stars bottom of Group C without a point.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren, Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko have been confirmed as members of the interim technical team for Ghana’s November double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The two matches offer Ghana a chance to revive their qualifying campaign as they attempt to return to the AFCON tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 edition in Morocco.
The search for a permanent coach is continuing as the Black Stars seek to recover from their poor start and rebuild before their next qualifying fixtures.
