Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid beat Sevilla to remain six points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Jose Mourinho’s side took the lead after 30 minutes when Arda Guler produced an impressive strike to break the deadlock.
Real extended their advantage seven minutes later. Mbappe went around goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos before calmly finishing to make it 2-0.
Sevilla pushed for a way back after half-time and came close when Felix Correia’s volley bounced off the pitch and deflected narrowly over the crossbar.
Real Madrid secured the three points when Mbappe was fouled inside the penalty area. The France striker took responsibility from the spot and converted for his second goal of the game.
The brace took Mbappe’s tally to 11 goals in 11 appearances in all competitions, underlining his strong start to the season.
Sevilla did reduce the deficit late on as Manu Bueno curled a composed finish into the bottom corner.
However, Real restored their two-goal advantage when Yan Diomande struck a fine effort to complete the scoring and confirm the victory.
The result gives Real Madrid an important three points before a major test in La Liga. Their next league fixture is El Clasico against Barcelona at Barcelona on 25 October.
