Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez says he expects to return “in a few weeks” after undergoing surgery on a broken jaw sustained during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory at Everton.
The 34-year-old Argentina international collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Martinez received treatment for eight minutes before being carried from the pitch on a stretcher. Chelsea later confirmed that he had undergone “successful” surgery in hospital.
The goalkeeper posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown on social media on Sunday, thanking those who had contacted him.
“Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well,” Martinez wrote.
“The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we’ll be back.”
Mike Penders replaced Martinez and is expected to start at least Chelsea’s next three matches.
Chelsea host Tottenham and Manchester United in their next two Premier League fixtures, with a Carabao Cup tie away to Liverpool scheduled between those games.
Penders, 21, joined Chelsea from Belgian club Genk for £17m in 2024. His appearance against Everton was his Premier League debut.
Alonso praised the goalkeeper’s response after coming on and said Chelsea had complete confidence in him.
“Mike has personality. He’s brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on,” Alonso said.
“He played in the cup games and whenever he’s needed. Like the other players, whenever they are needed they can perform.
“It’s all about the squad – that all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, and that’s very positive.”
