Tyrone Owusu scored a superb long-range goal for SC Telstar, but his side were beaten 4-3 by Feyenoord Rotterdam in a thrilling Dutch Eredivisie match at the BUKO Stadion on Saturday.
The Dutch-born Ghanaian forward, 22, produced a composed finish from outside the penalty area as Telstar fought back after conceding twice during a difficult opening spell.
Feyenoord took the lead inside the first minute through Malian winger Gaoussou Diarra, immediately putting the hosts under pressure. The visitors continued to attack and doubled their advantage in the 21st minute when Spanish forward Nacho scored.
Telstar appeared to be facing a difficult task, but Owusu gave them a route back into the contest with a moment of individual quality soon after Feyenoord’s second goal.
The forward found space to shoot from distance and struck the ball powerfully beyond Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst. The goal reduced the deficit to 2-1 and lifted the home side, while highlighting Owusu’s ability to threaten from outside the box.
Telstar’s renewed momentum was checked in the 32nd minute when Netherlands midfielder Sem Steijn restored Feyenoord’s two-goal lead. However, the hosts continued to push before half-time and were rewarded when Patrick Brouwer made it 3-2.
That goal ensured Telstar remained within reach at the interval after recovering from their early setback, with Owusu’s strike having helped keep them in the game.
Feyenoord increased the pressure after the restart and extended their lead when Steijn converted a penalty shortly after the break. It was his second goal of the afternoon and put the visitors 4-2 ahead.
Telstar responded with another sustained effort to mount a comeback. In the 69th minute, Noach Shenkman scored after receiving a pass from defender Sem Valk, bringing the score back to 4-3.
The goal created a tense final period as Telstar searched for an equaliser and Feyenoord attempted to protect their narrow advantage. The home side applied further pressure but could not find the finish needed to rescue a point, allowing Feyenoord to claim all three points from a seven-goal encounter.
Despite the defeat, Owusu’s performance added to his growing influence in Dutch football. He has now scored three goals in nine Eredivisie appearances this season.
He has also found the net once in four Dutch Cup appearances, taking his total to four goals across the two competitions. His scoring from distance provides Telstar with an additional attacking option, particularly when opponents defend deep and leave limited space around the penalty area.
Telstar will be disappointed to have conceded four goals and ended the match without a point, but Owusu can take confidence from another significant contribution in the final third. The Ghanaian forward will hope to maintain his scoring form in the club’s upcoming fixtures as Telstar seek greater consistency and improved results in the Dutch top flight.
