Manchester United’s difficult spell continued as Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second-half equaliser denied Michael Carrick a much-needed Premier League victory for the visitors at Elland Road.
The result means United have now gone six matches without a win in all competitions, their longest such run since the end of the 2018-19 campaign. They remain 13th in the table, while Leeds are seventh, three points ahead of Carrick’s side.
The match came at the end of a turbulent week for Manchester United, during which defender Lisandro Martinez was fined for criticising the club’s hierarchy. Martinez started at Elland Road, where United faced a hostile reception from their longstanding rivals.
The opening stages were fiercely contested, with bookings arriving before either side had established a threat in front of goal. Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson were both shown yellow cards for mistimed challenges.
The game opened up before the half-hour mark. Senne Lammens produced a full-stretch save to keep out Nico Elvedi, before Bryan Mbeumo missed an opportunity to put the visitors ahead when he headed wide from an unmarked position.
Mbeumo did not have to wait long to make amends. Ten minutes before half-time, he battled past James Justin after Youri Tielemans had delivered an excellent pass into the penalty area, giving Manchester United the lead.
Leeds responded soon after the restart. Tarik Muharemovic was first to a corner, but the loose ball fell for Calvert-Lewin, who beat Mbeumo to it and finished to spark a loud reaction from the home supporters.
Both teams had chances to claim the points late on, but neither could find a decisive goal. Manchester United captain Fernandes sent a shot wide, while Anton Stach was unable to keep his first-time effort down.
Leeds’ result extended their unbeaten home run in all competitions to March, while United’s wait for a victory goes on.
