Harry Kane scored in his 100th Bundesliga match as Bayern Munich returned to the top of the table with a 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig, inspired by Luis Diaz’s hat-trick.
Vincent Kompany’s defending champions had dropped four points from their opening five league games, matching the number they conceded across their first 17 matches last season. However, they produced a dominant display after disappointing draws with Augsburg in the Bundesliga and Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League.
Diaz opened the scoring in the 12th minute, running on to Joshua Kimmich’s clipped pass before finishing beyond Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt.
The Colombia forward then turned provider as Aleksandar Pavlovic doubled Bayern’s advantage, lashing the ball into the near corner after being set up by Diaz.
Michael Olise added a third before the interval. After exchanging passes with Harry Kane, who had moved into a deeper position to create space, Olise fired into the bottom corner.
Leipzig were given little opportunity to recover after half-time. Just 95 seconds into the second period, Diaz curled his second goal of the night into the far bottom corner.
Kane then marked his century of Bundesliga appearances by scoring his 102nd goal in the competition. The England captain finished from close range after Nathaniel Brown cut the ball back into his path.
Diaz completed his treble with 20 minutes remaining, delivering a powerful right-footed finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Andrija Maksimovic scored a consolation for the visitors in injury time, finding the top corner with an excellent strike.
Bayern had already registered 17 shots on target by the time Leipzig managed their first attempt on goal in the 78th minute. The hosts could have added further goals, but Vandevoordt made 11 saves.
The result moves Bayern to 14 points, with Borussia Dortmund’s goalless draw against Union Berlin earlier on Saturday allowing Kompany’s side to spend the night at the summit. Freiburg will move two points clear if they beat Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
Bayern’s next fixture is a Champions League meeting with Arsenal at Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 21 October, with kick-off at 20:00 BST.
Leipzig remain seventh after a contrasting start to the campaign. They have won all three of their home matches but lost each of their three away games.
