Medeama head coach Ibrahim Tanko says his side’s goalscoring success has been built on a collective attacking approach rather than dependence on individual brilliance, as the league leaders prepare to face FC Samartex.
The Yellow and Mauves have scored 12 goals in their opening six Ghana Premier League matches, with seven different players contributing to their total. That spread of goals has been central to Medeama’s impressive start to the campaign.
Kingsley Braye is the club’s leading scorer with four goals, while Kelvin Nkrumah and Emmanuel Annor have each scored twice. Four other players have also found the net once, underlining the range of attacking contributions within Tanko’s squad.
The Medeama manager believes the figures reflect a deliberate style of play in which every player is expected to contribute in the attacking phase. Defenders, midfielders and forwards have all played a part in helping the team maintain their scoring form.
Medeama will attempt to extend that run when they travel to the Nsenkyire Sports Arena to meet FC Samartex on Sunday, October 18.
Tanko’s team sit at the top of the Ghana Premier League table with 14 points from their first six matches. They have won four games and drawn two, leaving Medeama as the only unbeaten team in the competition.
Their hosts are third on 11 points and will be seeking to protect an impressive home record while also handing Medeama their first defeat of the season. FC Samartex’s position near the top of the table reflects their own strong opening to the campaign.
The match brings together two sides who have made positive starts, with Medeama’s ability to score through different areas of the pitch likely to be an important feature of the contest.
The recent history between the clubs suggests that a close game could be in prospect. Four of their last eight Ghana Premier League meetings have ended in draws, adding to the expectation of a competitive encounter at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena.
For Medeama, the challenge will be to maintain the attacking balance that has taken them to the summit while overcoming a Samartex side determined to preserve its home form. Tanko’s emphasis on collective involvement will be tested against opponents who have also established themselves among the leading teams after six matches.
