Paris Saint-Germain delivered a statement performance at Etihad Stadium, overwhelming Manchester City 4-2 in a match that saw the Champions League holders establish a three-goal half-time lead before surviving a spirited fightback.
The defeat came in City’s first home fixture since the club was found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. Their supporters created an atmosphere of defiance, while former manager Pep Guardiola watched from the stands on his return to the club.
That show of resistance was soon tested as Paris Saint-Germain produced a devastating opening 45 minutes against Enzo Maresca’s side.
Desire Doue gave the visitors the lead after 13 minutes, sending a low shot beyond City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The France forward then turned provider two minutes later, delivering an accurate cross which Ousmane Dembele headed into the net.
Manchester City struggled to contain their opponents as Paris Saint-Germain continued to find space and combine effectively. Vitinha added the third after 32 minutes, finishing clinically following excellent link-up play between Maghnes Akliouche and Warren Zaire-Emery.
Maresca responded by making three substitutions at half-time and the changes brought an immediate improvement. City returned after the interval with greater urgency, creating a series of chances and putting Paris Saint-Germain under sustained pressure.
Eight minutes into the second half, Erling Haaland gave the home side hope. Iliman Ndiaye’s cross found the striker, who directed a flicked header past the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
However, City’s momentum was checked in unusual fashion after 62 minutes. Donnarumma saved Akliouche’s initial effort, but the ball fell behind the goalkeeper and crossed the line, restoring Paris Saint-Germain’s three-goal advantage.
Manchester City continued to press rather than concede defeat. Haaland scored again to give them another chance of an unlikely recovery, and he came close to completing a hat-trick when Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvei Safonov produced an outstanding save to deny him.
The final opportunity to add further drama came from the penalty spot. Ferran Torres had the chance to reduce the gap late on, but Donnarumma kept out his spot-kick to ensure Paris Saint-Germain completed a memorable Champions League victory.
The result leaves City reflecting on a first half in which they were repeatedly exposed, despite their much-improved display after the break, while Paris Saint-Germain showed why they are the current holders of the competition.
