Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has ruled out any government attempt to dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA), saying the focus is instead on reforming the organisation from within.
Adams said the government recognised both legal and institutional limits on its ability to intervene in the association’s affairs. The GFA operates as a private entity, meaning the state cannot simply order it to close.
“We have limitations. Government cannot shut down a private entity like the Ghana Football Association,” the minister said.
His comments indicate that the government’s preferred course is to encourage changes to the way football is administered in Ghana, rather than dismantle the existing governing structure.
The GFA remains responsible for the running of football in the country. Its duties include organising domestic competitions, managing Ghana’s national teams and implementing football development programmes.
Adams’ position draws a distinction between the government’s role in setting sports policy and the authority of the GFA to manage football independently. Any proposed changes will therefore have to respect the association’s legal status and the rules governing football administration.
The minister was speaking as discussions continue over the future direction of Ghanaian football, including calls for improvements in its management and governance.
The government’s approach is consequently centred on institutional reform while allowing the GFA to continue operating. That means concerns about the administration of the sport are to be addressed through changes within the current system, not through the association’s abolition.
The effectiveness of any reform programme is expected to depend on the measures ultimately pursued, the cooperation of relevant stakeholders and how the GFA responds to the proposals.
Adams’ remarks make clear that the government is not seeking to take direct control of the association. Instead, it intends to pursue reforms within the limits of the law and the framework that governs football administration in Ghana.
