Ghana coach Kasim Mingle says the Black Starlets have completed the first of their three objectives at the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after reaching the semi-finals of the WAFU B U17 Championship with one group match remaining.
Ghana secured their place in the knockout stages by beating Benin 3-1 on Tuesday. The result was their second successive victory and kept them on course for qualification for the continental tournament.

Mingle said the team had set out with three specific ambitions for the competition: to reach the semi-finals, to qualify for the 2027 U17 AFCON by reaching the final, and to win the WAFU B title.
The former Nations FC and Swedru All Blacks coach welcomed the progress made by his players but said qualification for the semi-finals was only the first step.
“Coming here, we had three targets; to qualify for the semi-final, to qualify for the AFCON by being finalists and to lift the trophy,” he said.
“So far, the first target of making it to the semi-final has been achieved. We have two more to chase, and In Sha Allah we will achieve.”
Ghana will now prepare for their final group-stage fixture, with the Black Starlets aiming to preserve their winning momentum before the knockout phase begins.
Their route to the 2027 U17 AFCON depends on reaching the final of the WAFU B U17 Championship. Winning the competition would also fulfil Mingle’s third and ultimate objective.
The Black Starlets’ two victories have given them a strong start to their campaign, but the team must now turn their attention to securing a place in the final and competing for the WAFU B U17 Championship trophy.
