Former WBO super-bantamweight champion Isaac “The Royal Storm” Dogboe has announced his retirement from professional boxing, ending a career in which he became one of Ghana’s most prominent world champions.
Dogboe leaves the sport with a record of 24 wins and four defeats, including 16 victories inside the distance.
His defining achievement came in 2018, when, aged 23, he defeated Jessie Magdaleno to claim the WBO super-bantamweight world title. The success made Dogboe Ghana’s youngest world boxing champion at the time.
Dogboe produced a determined and aggressive performance against Magdaleno, stopping the American in the 11th round. The contest highlighted the strength, resilience and attacking style that would become closely associated with the Ghanaian fighter.
He made a successful first defence of the belt against Japan’s Hidenori Otake, ending the fight in the opening round. His reign was later brought to a close by Mexican boxer Emanuel Navarrete, who defeated Dogboe before winning their rematch as well.
Those losses did not end Dogboe’s ambitions. He moved up to featherweight, where he rebuilt his career with significant wins over Chris Avalos, Adam Lopez and Christopher Diaz.
The Ghanaian also remained involved in major championship contests and qualifying bouts. His later career included a challenge for the WBO featherweight title against Cuban fighter Robeisy Ramirez and a WBC final eliminator against Nick Ball.
Dogboe became known for his punching power and willingness to engage in demanding fights. His trademark battle cry, “Neho!”, meaning “to uproot”, became a familiar part of his identity in the ring.
Announcing his decision to retire, Dogboe thanked God, boxing supporters and those who had helped him throughout his career.
“Glory Be To The LORD ALMIGHTY and Thank you boxing fans and supporters Your Support Over The Years Is Greatly Appreciated. Words alone cannot express my sincerest gratitude. Thank you!! NEHO!! Isaac ‘Royal Storm’ Dogboe. This Is Goodbye,” he wrote.
Dogboe’s career took him from Ghana to the highest level of professional boxing. His world-title victory over Magdaleno, his successful defence against Otake and his battles with Navarrete remain the central moments of his time as a champion.
He also demonstrated the ability to recover from setbacks, continuing to compete at a high level after losing his title and stepping up to featherweight. His victories over Avalos, Lopez and Diaz, together with his appearances in world-title and eliminator contests, added to a record that has secured his place in Ghanaian boxing history.
His retirement brings to an end the professional journey of a fighter whose explosive style, determination and memorable performances made him one of Ghana’s most celebrated boxing figures.
