Chelsea are exploring a possible move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as they consider alternatives for Enzo Fernandez, with the Senegal international having been presented to the London club while discussions continue between the parties.
The 22-year-old has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, with Liverpool and Crystal Palace also involved in the race. Chelsea have begun gathering information about Camara’s personal terms, according to The Sun, but Liverpool may hold an advantage because they will compete in the Champions League, unlike Chelsea.
Crystal Palace remain serious contenders too. Monaco rejected an earlier offer from Palace during the current summer transfer window, but the London club’s interest has not gone away. The competition for Camara’s signature therefore remains open as the transfer deadline approaches.
Camara made 24 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco last season, scoring three goals and supplying three assists. The midfielder has now completed three full seasons in France’s top division, following his previous spell with Metz.
Despite being born in 2004, Camara is also nearing his 50th appearance for Senegal. His experience at both domestic and international level has helped make him an attractive option for clubs assessing midfield reinforcements.
Chelsea’s interest could become more urgent if Fernandez leaves for Manchester City. City manager Enzo Maresca has reportedly identified the Argentina midfielder as one of his main summer priorities as he looks to strengthen his squad following Rodri’s move to Barcelona.
Manchester City previously missed a deadline set by Chelsea to complete a deal by paying £120m earlier this month. However, Chelsea remain willing to sell Fernandez if a suitable financial offer is submitted.
Fernandez was left out of Chelsea’s squad for Thursday night’s victory over Luton Town in the Carabao Cup. His absence prompted further speculation about his future, although head coach Xabi Alonso rejected the suggestion that the decision was connected to the transfer reports.
“We have other players who need to get minutes,” Alonso said.
The situation leaves Chelsea monitoring both the potential departure of Fernandez and the availability of Camara. While no agreement has been reached for the Monaco midfielder, the Premier League interest means the Senegal international could become the focus of a competitive transfer battle in the final days of the window.
Camara’s previous performances for Monaco, his international standing and his age have all contributed to the growing attention around him. Chelsea, Liverpool and Crystal Palace will now have to decide whether to advance their interest before the transfer deadline closes.
