Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel believes Andre Ayew has the character and experience to become a major force in the future development of Ghanaian football.
Mikel was speaking after arriving in Ghana on Friday to work on a project with the former Black Stars captain. He praised Ayew’s contribution both on and off the pitch and suggested the 36-year-old could help bring meaningful change to the country’s football landscape.
Ayew is Ghana’s most-capped senior international and is widely regarded as one of the country’s outstanding players. Mikel placed him alongside some of Ghana’s most celebrated footballers, including Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan.
“He’s the main man. You talk about the legends in Ghana football, you talk about Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, the guys that I played against. Of course, then you talk about Andre Ayew. I think he’s a top player,” Mikel said.
The former Nigeria captain also highlighted Ayew’s qualities away from the pitch, saying his influence could extend beyond his playing career.
“But he’s a great guy. He’s a top player, a great human being. I think if you talk about African football, I think he might be the guy that can bring some change to Ghanaian football,” he added.
Mikel’s comments come at a time when former players are increasingly being discussed as potential contributors to football administration and development across Africa. A number of ex-internationals have moved into leadership and governance roles after ending their playing careers.
Ayew’s record gives him considerable experience at the highest level. He helped Ghana become the first African country to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009 before becoming an important member of the senior Black Stars team for more than a decade.
He played for Ghana at the 2010, 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and appeared in several Africa Cup of Nations campaigns. Ghana finished runners-up at the 2010 and 2015 editions, with Ayew part of those teams.
Although he was not included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ayew has continued to maintain strong links with the national game. He remains involved in supporting the country’s different national teams and continues to have a prominent presence in Ghanaian football.
The former Swansea City and West Ham United forward is also involved with Nania FC, the club founded by his father, Ghana great Abedi Pele.
That background, together with his long international career, has prompted increasing speculation that Ayew could eventually move into football administration. Some observers regard him as a potential future figure within the Ghana Football Association.
Mikel’s endorsement therefore adds to the growing expectation that Ayew’s influence may continue after his playing career, with the former Black Stars captain viewed not only as one of Ghana’s leading footballers but also as someone capable of contributing to the sport’s future direction.
