Carlos Queiroz’s position as head coach of Ghana is increasingly uncertain, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) holding discussions with other coaches as negotiations over his future reportedly stall.
The Portuguese was appointed in April 2026 on a short-term contract covering Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He guided the Black Stars into the knockout stage, but talks about extending his contract beyond the tournament have not produced an agreement.
The GFA’s consideration of alternative candidates has added to the uncertainty surrounding Queiroz’s position. Nana Oduro Sarfo, a member of the association’s Executive Council, confirmed that the organisation remains in contact with other coaches about the Black Stars job.
“The Ghana Football Association is still in talks with other coaches for the Black Stars job,” Oduro Sarfo told Kumasi-based Ezra Radio.
His comments suggest that, despite Ghana’s progress at the World Cup and calls for continuity, Queiroz’s future has not been settled.
President John Mahama had publicly supported the idea of keeping Queiroz in charge. He argued that retaining the experienced Portuguese coach, together with the current squad, could improve Ghana’s prospects of challenging for major honours in the future.
However, reports indicate that Queiroz’s demands have made it difficult for the two sides to reach common ground. The GFA must now decide whether to continue negotiations with the former national team coach or move forward with another option.
The uncertainty comes as Ghana prepares for the next stage of its international programme, with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaching. The association is therefore expected to face pressure to resolve the managerial situation quickly and provide clarity before competitive preparations begin.
Queiroz’s appointment was intended to take Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and his success in reaching the knockout stage strengthened the case for continuity. Nevertheless, the GFA’s willingness to speak to other coaches indicates that the post-tournament arrangement remains unresolved.
For now, no decision has been announced on whether Queiroz will remain in charge of the Black Stars. Further negotiations will determine whether the Portuguese coach continues his work with Ghana or whether the GFA appoints a new manager ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
