The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) just got more exciting.
South Africa and Mali lead Group C with 4 points each after Tanzania held South Africa to a 1-1 draw, a result which means Ghana, with 1 point, stays in contention for the knockout stage after Mali’s draw against them earlier.
Now, Ghana’s Black Queens face Tanzania in a must-win match in the last game.
Opah Clement’s 24th-minute goal gave Tanzania the lead against South Africa, but Bambanani Mbane equalized in the 70th minute.
Despite a late red card to Tanzania’s Elizabeth Chenge, the Taifa Queens held on for the draw. This result keeps Ghana’s hopes alive, and a win against Tanzania could send them to the quarterfinals, depending on the South Africa-Mali match outcome.
The final group match is a do-or-die for Ghana. They’ll need to beat Tanzania and hope other results go in their favor to advance.
