The Ghana Football Association (GFA) says it is currently reviewing the overall structure of the men’s senior national team, the Black Stars, following their premature exit from the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cote D’Ivoire.
In a statement released on Tuesday after a meeting involving the Executive Council of the Association and Chairmen of the RFAs, the GFA acknowledged full responsibility for Ghana’s disappointing AFCON campaign and expressed its commitment to addressing the identified issues.
As part of these corrective measures, the GFA announced a thorough review encompassing various aspects of the team.
The GFA also extended its sincere apology to Ghanaians for the subpar performance of the Black Stars in Ivory Coast, acknowledging that the team fell significantly below “the high expectations we all share.”
“…GFA wishes to assure all stakeholders that the requisite steps are being taken to address the issues at hand, and a thorough review of the team’s strategies, training, compensation, and overall structure is underway.”
Exiting the AFCON with a third-place finish in Group B without securing a victory, including a loss to Cape Verde and draws with Egypt and Mozambique, resulted in the subsequent dismissal of head coach Chris Hughton and the dissolution of the technical team.
In response, the GFA has established a five-member committee, chaired by the Association’s Vice President, Mark Addo, tasked with selecting a new head coach.
