2023 AfconQ: Tariq Lamptey out, Kingsley Schindler in for Ghana-Angola games

Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey has withdrawn from the Ghana squad for the March international break due to injury, with Germany-born Kingsley Kojo Schindler replacing him.

On March 9, the 22-year-old was drafted by new Black Stars coach Chris Hughton into his maiden squad of 25 players despite the right-back being forced off with a knee injury within the first 15 minutes of his side’s 4-0 win over West Ham five days prior.

With Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi initially remarking that the injury was a “small” one, Hughton had hoped Lamptey would be fit enough to be involved in the Black Stars’ upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying doubleheader game against Angola.

The former Chelsea youngster has since missed games against Leeds United and Crystal Palace, and last Sunday’s FA Cup quarterfinal clash against Grimsby Town with Brighton stating prior to their last game before the international break:

“Tariq is not able to play [against Grimsby], but the other players are good.”

When asked if he would play for Ghana this month, he added: “I think no and I hope no because if he isn’t able to play against Grimsby, I can’t imagine he can play with his national team.”

Opportunity Kojo Schindler

Lamptey’s absence has created an opening for FC Köln star Kingsley Kojo Schindler. The 29-year-old born in Hamburg is known for his versatility – as a right winger and right-back. He has been on the radar of the Stars for some time now and finally gets his chance.

Schindler arrived in Accra on Monday to join the Black Stars camp for the first time.

Meanwhile, seventeen (17) players are currently in camp ahead of the trip to Kumasi on Tuesday afternoon. They include Abdul Manaf Nurudeen, Joseph Wollacott, Alexander Djiku, Denis Odoi, Kingsley Schindler, Patrick Kpozo, Daniel Amartey, Joseph Aidoo, Andre Ayew, Joseph Painstil, Ransford Yeboah, Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew, Mohammed Salisu, Majeed Ashimeru and Edmund Addo.

The other players are expected in camp this morning ahead of the trip to Kumasi.
