? Jurgen Klopp, one of the very best of his generation

Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at Liverpool in 2015 opened a new chapter in the Reds’ history.

The club had become used to scrambling for Europa League places and never battled the likes of Chelsea, Man United, and their neighbours City, for the Premier League title, leave alone a Champions League spot.

Fast-forward to four, five years later and the club has once again taken its place at the table of Europe’s very best, and all credit to Klopp.

The Reds won their first title of the season on Sunday evening, beating Chelsea 11-10 on penalties to lift the Carabao Cup.

It was a special victory for Klopp if his celebrations were anything to go by.

The German’s journey is a beautiful story. He started at Mainz but made a name for himself while managing Borussia Dortmund, whom he transformed into world-beaters, managing to end, albeit for a short while, Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga.

Titles won

Klopp has won 10 major trophies during his managing career which has moved him from  Mainz to Borussia Dortmund and now, Liverpool.

He led Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, a period he also won the German Cup.

The German then tasted glory again in 2013 and 2014 when he led Dortmund to the DFL Supercup.

He continued with his success in England at Liverpool, where he won his first title in 2019 as the Reds beat Tottenham to lift the Champions League, before beating Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final.

The following season they’d ‘trade’ the Champions League for the Premier League crown, ending a 30-year wait.

Klopp’s side became world champions as Roberto Firmino scored the only goal of the match as they beat Flamengo 1-0 in extra time to win the FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite that success, Klopp has had his fair share of disappointments, with the Champions League final loss to Bayern in 2013 at Wembley ranking highest.

In total, Klopp lost six finals between 2013 & 2018, including three while in charge of the Merseyside club.

Trophy haul

  • ? ? Bundesliga

Laying the ground for more trophies?

The Reds have one trophy in the cabinet and will be going for more. They are six points behind Manchester City in the Premier League and have enjoyed quite a season in Europe, where they hold a healthy 2-0 lead over Inter Milan in the Champions League round of 16.

The win at Wembley on Sunday could turbocharge the Reds and push them to greater heights this season
