Wolves linked with Paul Onuachu

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing Genk forward Paul Onuachu this summer and the Nigerian could be a superb addition to Bruno Lage’s side.

What’s the word?

Reports have suggested that Wolves are set to rival top European sides such as Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen for the six-foot-seven striker, after another impressive season in the Belgian top-flight.

The report claims that Genk are willing to sell him for just €18m (£15m), while Onuachu has spoken about his desire to play in the Premier League in the past, so Wolves could hold the edge over their European competitors.

A good signing for Lage?

Wolves are in desperate need of a new striker this summer. Raul Jimenez finished as the club’s top scorer with just six goals last season, as the Old Gold struggled to find the back of the net on a far-too-regular basis.

The Mexican forward sadly hasn’t been the same since his fractured skull injury and will turn 32 next season, so cannot be relied upon to lead the line in Lage’s side next season.

Should Wolves sign Onuachu?

While Wolves pinned a lot of hopes on teenage forward Fabio Silva, he failed to score in 25 appearances last season and is set to join Anderlecht on loan, so signing a new forward has to be a priority for the Old Gold.

Onuachu has been prolific during his time in Belgium, scoring 68 goals in just 112 appearances for Genk, including 23 in all competitions last season.

The Nigeria international – dubbed a “phenomenon” by Genk Chief Executive Officer Erik Gerits – would arrive at Molineux in confident mood and would certainly be a threat to Premier League defences with his height and finishing ability.

Former professional footballer Josh Fashanu was full of praise for the forward after he scored for Nigeria in 2021, saying:

“I want to tell Onuachu well done and a big congratulation because he has proved to everybody that he is still number one and indeed a goal king.”

Given Wolves’ lack of attacking threat last season, Onuachu could really turn their fortunes around if he can maintain his form from Belgium in England, so Lage should definitely look at signing the £15.3m-rated forward.
