Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer has identified Hearts of Oak skipper Benjamin Asare as the standout home-based player in Ghana.
The experienced German coach says the goalkeeper has impressed him more than any other locally based footballer since he joined the national team setup.
True to his promise of keeping a close eye on the Ghana Premier League, Schaefer has toured several match venues over the past two months.
During that period, he has interacted with coaches and players while assessing potential talents for the senior national side.
He was present over the weekend when Medeama knocked out Samartex on penalties to secure a place in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
Speaking exclusively to Medeama FM, the former Cameroon boss made his admiration for Asare clear.
“Over the past two months. I have been visiting league venues, speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper” he said.
“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe. I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars.” He said.
Asare has been shortlisted for the best goalkeeper award for January after keeping three clean sheets.
