why the extension of Désiré Doué drags on

It’s no secret that Stade Rennais is a formidable machine for training top-level talent. After Eduardo Camaving left for Real Madrid then more recently Mathys Tel who went to Bayern Munich for more than 25 M€, a new talent made in “Red and Black” has been out for a few weeks from the training center of the Breton club.

And the least we can say is that the beginnings of Désiré Doué were thunderous and push back the records already established by the two stars mentioned above. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, an international U17 in the category, notably became the first player born in 2005 to find the way to goals in one of the 5 biggest European championships. After having already signed a first pro contract a few months ago, Doué had become one of the priorities of Florian Maurice who was working behind the scenes to extend the lease of a player whose profile was already ardently appreciated by Luis Campos and PSG as we revealed to you.

The sudden about-face of the player’s father…

But while the player’s entourage had given a verbal agreement with the sporting director of the Breton club and a total agreement had even been found. The operation was to be completed quickly two weeks ago, but an astonishing about-face on the part of the player’s father came upside down. According to a Rennes source, the latter wanted to renegotiate at the last moment the amount of the player’s salary and even the duration of the contract. Something to stretch the training coached by Bruno Genesio who is counting more than ever on his number 33.

But Rennes fans can be reassured, nothing indicates that Désiré Doué will not extend his lease with his training club, quite the contrary. First of all because the great French hope is very attached to Rennes, then because optimism remains on the side of Florian Maurice. Within Stade Rennais, we believe we have done everything to put the player in the best possible conditions, whether with this new contract offered or with playing time and the proposed sports project.

It now remains for the various parties to find common ground. If time is not pressing, Désiré Doué, being under contract with the Rouge et Noir until June 2024, the situation is not very comfortable for either party. Current 4th in Ligue 1, qualified for the next round of the Europa League, Rennes must end its series of matches in the best possible way before the long international break set up due to the World Cup in Qatar. There is no doubt that a contract extension for Désiré Doué would come at the right time for both Bruno Genesio and Florian Maurice…
