What does Zubimendi deal mean for Thomas Partey’s future at Arsenal?

On May 11, 2025, Arsenal reportedly secured a significant breakthrough in their pursuit of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, with the Gunners poised to trigger the midfielder’s £50.8 million release clause.

The Spaniard is set to become Arsenal’s first signing of the summer, marking the beginning of a new era under sporting director Andrea Berta, raising questions about the future of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey.

Zubimendi, a Euro 2024 champion, brings a robust defensive presence and technical finesse, with stats like 74 clearances and a 63.6% tackling success rate surpassing Partey’s numbers this season.

The 26 year old’s arrival could see Declan Rice shift to a more attacking role, potentially sidelining Partey in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Partey, who joined Arsenal for a record £45 million in 2020, is 31 years old and in the final stretch of his contract, set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Ghanaian’s future remains unclear. Kickoffghana understands that while Partey’s camp initially expected a departure, recent developments suggest Arsenal might be open to discussing a contract extension.

Despite a solid campaign with 45 appearances, his past injury issues—managing only 15 games in 2023-24—contrast with Zubimendi’s reliability.

Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, who previously sanctioned Partey’s move to the Emirates Stadium while at Atletico Madrid, might push for a short-term contract extension, possibly two years.

However, Partey’s £200,000-per-week wages and a likely reduced role could prompt him to consider offers from Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, or Saudi clubs.

As Arsenal aim to compete in the Premier League and Champions League, Zubimendi’s signing marks a shift toward a younger, more durable midfield.

Partey must now decide whether to stay and fight for his place or embark on a new chapter, with his legacy as a key figure in Arsenal’s recent resurgence already secure.
