Charles Taylor, a former Ghana international, has stressed the need to have bold coaches leading the Black Stars, Ghana’s senior national football team.
Taylor’s remarks follow recent developments surrounding the coaching staff, particularly in light of George Boateng’s application for the vacant head coach position.
Boateng, a former assistant coach under the tenure of Chris Hughton, who was relieved of his duties after Ghana’s underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has sparked debate within the football community. George Boateng was also an assistant coach under Otto Addo.
Taylor, in response to Boateng’s candidacy, articulated a viewpoint favoring coaches of a more decisive caliber, citing individuals such as Essien, Stephen Appiah, and Laryea.
“Coaching we don’t use degree we use sense so sometimes we should stop making that important if we want the Black Stars to develop there are coaches we have to mention and attach to Black Stars and not George Boateng,” he told Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com
“If we want the Black Stars to do well Essien, Stephen Appiah and Laryea I always say that these people should handle the national team if they qualify to do the job then those three because it will be difficult if Essien is in the dugout and you the player feel big. If you don’t respect your coach you cant progress because the coaches in the past nobody has been able to say this player so far as you play whatever team that does not mean you are bigger than the Black Stars.
“If we get these people because I have seen Laryea in U-17 somebody came with a car bringing somebody Laryea told the person to leave he doesnt need him because he hasn’t invited him to come to the national team these are the people we want we want boldness coaches to handle the Black Stars,”
