After hobbling off late in Saturday’s FA Cup final triumph against Chelsea, Virgil van Dijk indicated that he is confident he has not sustained a significant injury.
The Liverpool defender played the entire 90 minutes but did not return for extra time, with Joel Matip filling in for the last 30 minutes.
Fans were alarmed at the sight of another important cog in the machine looking to pick up an injury, especially after seeing Mohamed Salah pull up after 32 minutes, but Van Dijk has done his best to calm those fears.
“Hopefully well, we’ll check it out,” he said after the game.
“I felt it in the first half when I sprinted, I felt a twinge behind my knee, I played on.
“In the end, I can’t risk it for the team and I need to trust Joel. Hopefully, it will be fine.”
Manager Jurgen Klopp echoed that sentiment after the game, telling BBC Sport: “I think Virgil is fine but his muscle was hurt.”
On Tuesday, the Reds face Van Dijk’s previous club, Southampton, before finishing the season against Wolves on May 22.
There’s also the Champions League final, which takes place six days later vs. Real Madrid.
