Ghana international Tariq Lamptey netted one of the goals as Brighton gained a shock 3-1 victory away to knock Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup Wednesday night.
The versatile full-back who is known to operate on the right – in this visit to the Emirates Stadium – played as the left side of a four-man defence.
Arsenal took the lead in the first half thanks to a fine goal from Eddie Nketiah, who curled into the far corner after Reiss Nelson had sliced through the Seagulls midfield.
But Brighton were allowed back into the game following an error by Karl Hein, Arsenal’s 20-year-old debutant goalkeeper. As he came out of his goal to collect an overhit pass, Hein slipped. By the time he had regained his footing, the ball was past him. Down went Danny Welbeck, obviously fouled, and the former Arsenal forward happily buried the resulting penalty.
Arsenal went on to dominate the start of the second half but Brighton carried plenty of threat still, especially following the introduction of Japan winger Kaoru Mitoma who went on to curl into the same corner that Nketiah found in the first half to make it 2-1.
Arsenal, with a game to chase, were now leaving huge spaces in their midfield.
Brighton sensed the opportunity to counter and Tariq Lamptey’s searing pace did the damage for their third goal in the 71st minute following a Billy Gilmour assist.
