VIDEO: Kudus off the bench to salvage point for Ajax

Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus came off the bench to score as struggling champions Ajax settled for a 1-1 draw at home to bottom club Volendam in the Dutch Eredivisie on Thursday night.

It was a tension-packed game at the Johan Cruijff ArenA where the home crowd waved white flags and chanted for head coach Alfred Schreuder to be sacked due to a number of poor results in a row.

Volendam defended strongly from the start and Ajax struggled to break them down.

Ajax had all the ball but from Volendam’s first effort on goal, they took the lead. Daman Marani netted a free-kick from former Ajax midfielder Carel Eiting in the 59th minute.

The desperate hosts immediately responded to going down with triple substitution which included Kudus. And with ten minutes left, he levelled for Ajax – his 6th goal in the league this campaign.

Volendam almost regained their lead but Henk Veerman failed to punish a lack of contact between Gerónimo Rulli and Álvarez.

Six minutes were added on but Ajax could not find the winning goal.

Sitting 5th on the league table, Ajax have now played 7 games without a win and are 7 points off the top spot occupied by PSV Eindhoven.
